Message from Dr. Alan Bernstein, CIHR President, about IPPH's Transition

At the end of June 2008, Dr. John Frank, founding Scientific Director of the CIHR Institute of Population and Public Health (IPPH) will conclude his term. Dr. Frank has a well-earned reputation for his commitment to and enthusiasm for research, his collegial and inclusive approach, as well as his sense of humour.

Although this transition is almost one year away, I would like to take this opportunity to thank John for his outstanding leadership and vision in establishing IPPH. In doing so, he has brought a new energy to the Canadian public health research endeavour. John's sound scientific advice contributed to establishing the Public Health Agency of Canada and to guiding the work of six national Collaborating Centres for Public Health. I wish John all the success in his new role as Director, Scottish Collaboration for Public Health Research and Policy, co-funded by the Medical Research Council of the United Kingdom and the Scottish Executive Health Department.

Over the coming year, IPPH staff in Toronto and Ottawa, the Institute's Advisory Board, and senior CIHR management will continue to work together to ensure that this leadership transition proceeds as efficiently and smoothly as possible.

CIHR will soon begin looking for a new Scientific Director for IPPH. I am confident we will once again succeed in recruiting an excellent individual who will continue to build on the Institute's successes.

Sincerely,

Dr. Alan Bernstein, O.C., FRSC
President
