Listening For Direction

Listening for Direction: A National Consultation on Health Services and Policy Issues (2001)

From January to March 2001, a national consultation was held to identify research themes for future applied health services and policy research, called Listening for Direction: A national consultation on health services and policy issues. Five organizations partnered together to lead the process, including the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF), the CIHR-Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR), the Canadian Institute for Health Information, the Canadian Coordinating Office for Health Technology Assessment (CCOHTA), and the Advisory Committee on Health Services of the Conference of Federal/Provincial/Territorial Deputy Ministers of Health. The main objective of this consultation was to help design research themes that respond to the short- and long-term needs of policy makers and managers in the health system over the next two to five years.

Final report: Listening for Direction I, National consultation on health services and policy issues, 2001.

Listening for Direction II: A National Consultation on Health Services and Policy Issues (2004)

Listening for Direction II was launched in November 2003, and consisted of six consultation workshops held throughout Canada in January and February 2004. LfD II included the same partner organizations as LfD I as well as the Health Statistics Division of Statistics Canada. The final LfD II report, Listening for Direction II: National Consultation on Health Services and Policy Issues for 2004-2007, summarizes the 10 themes that were identified as priority areas for research funding and policy development by numerous organizations throughout Canada, for the period 2004-2007.

Listening for Direction III: A National Consultation on Health Services and Policy Issues (2007)

In 2007, eight national organizations partnered for the third round of Listening for Direction:

With additional financial support from Health Canada, the consultations were extended for the first time to include the northern territories - the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

For the 2007 Listening for Direction process, the partners determined that the objectives were to identify short-term (one to two years) and longer-term (three to 10 years) health system priorities.

Preliminary results of the consultation are now available, as is a list of the preliminary research themes and their descriptions. An overview of the process will be available in the final report.
