CNSC Approves Renewal of AECL's Operating Licence for Dedicated Isotope Facility

(October 26) AECL is pleased to report that the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has approved its application to renew the Operating Licence for AECL’s Dedicated Isotope Facilities (DIF). The renewed licence is valid until October 31, 2011. Read more

Second CANDU Unit in European Union Officially In Service

(October 05) The European Union’s second CANDU nuclear power plant has achieved continuous full power and has been placed in service. Cernavoda Unit 2 CANDU nuclear power station was officially commissioned on Friday, October 5, 2007 during ceremonies attended by Romanian Prime Minister Călin Popescu–Tăriceanu and senior officials from AECL.  Read more

AECL Signs Memorandum of Understanding with China and Argentina for Future Cooperation on CANDU Projects

(September 04) China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), Nucleoeléctrica Argentina S.A. (NASA), and AECL have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to conduct a joint study of the potential for cooperation in design, manufacture, construction and operation of CANDU nuclear power plants on future projects in Argentina, Canada and China. Team CANDU Supports Ontario Power Authority’s Supply Plan Recommendations

(August 30)  Team CANDU supports the Ontario Power Authority’s new Integrated Power System Plan (IPSP) outlining a balanced approach for meeting the province’s electricity needs by incorporating aggressive conservation and reliance on renewable energy sources, and continuing to rely on nuclear for base load power. AECL Awarded Preventative Maintenance Contract For Qinshan Power Plant In China

(August 10) AECL is pleased to announce that its CANDU Services group has been awarded a five-year contract by the Third Qinshan Nuclear Power Company (TQNPC) for the development of a preventative maintenance program for the two CANDU 6 Qinshan units located in Zhejiang, China. Read more

Romania’s Second CANDU Unit Nears Commercial Operation

(May 07) AECL today announced that the new Cernavoda Unit 2 CANDU 6 nuclear power plant owned by Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica (SNN) SA, Romania’s nuclear public utility, sustained a fission reaction for the first time at approximately 11:25 p.m. local time on Sunday, May 6, 2007. Read more
