OTTAWA (March 6, 2007) - The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health, today announced the appointment of Cornelia Wieman to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Governing Council for a three-year term.
"Over the course of her career, Dr. Wieman has shown an outstanding commitment to health care and has made a real difference in her community," said Minister Clement. "This appointment to the Governing Council is a reflection of the important work she has done and will continue to do in the years to come."
Dr. Wieman is Canada's first female Aboriginal psychiatrist, Co-Director of the Indigenous Health Research Development Program, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health Services at the University of Toronto. Previously, Dr. Wieman practiced as a consultant psychiatrist at Six Nations Mental Health Services, a community mental health clinic in Ontario. Dr. Wieman takes a special interest in Aboriginal youth and in important health and social issues such as suicide, HIV/AIDS, health care policy and Aboriginal health human resources.
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research is the Government of Canada's agency for health research. CIHR's mission is to create new scientific knowledge and to catalyze its translation into improved health, more effective health services and products, and a strengthened Canadian health care system. Composed of 13 Institutes, CIHR provides leadership and support to nearly 10,000 health researchers and trainees across Canada.
