Redesigned Regional Partnerships Program

(2007-07-18) CIHR is pleased to announce the successful redesign and continuation of the Regional Partnerships Program (RPP) to be launched in December 2007. The Regional Partnerships Program was initiated in 1997-98 by the Medical Research Council as a response to a decline in funding to medical researchers in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, all of which had medical schools and relatively small populations. In 1999-2000 the program was expanded to include New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, both without medical schools but with small populations. The redesigned program will continue to focus on these provinces and will have a budget of $4.4 million dollars per year.

The overarching objective of the RPP program is to build partnerships and support health research capacity development in less populous regions of Canada. This investment recognizes the benefit of local health research capacity and is designed to enable researchers in less populous regions of Canada to meet CIHR's mandate through the creation of new knowledge and its translation into improved health for Canadians, more effective health services and products and a strengthened Canadian health care system.

Administratively, each province will have an RPP Advisory Board which will manage the program at the provincial level including the pre-screening of provincial RPP applications. There will also be a National RPP Advisory Board composed of members of the provincial boards and CIHR's Management Team. Items of concern to all parties involved in RPP will be dealt with by this body.
