AECL to seek Generic Design Approval for ACR-1000 in United Kingdom

London, UK, 2007 May 29 — Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) applauds the United Kingdom’s recommendations for meeting future electricity needs as outlined in the Energy White Paper and plans to seek pre-licensing approval for its ACR-1000® Advanced CANDU Reactor® as part of the Generic Design Assessment process.

“We are very pleased that the energy review is moving forward and believe that nuclear power will play a significant role in assisting the UK in cutting harmful emissions,” stated AECL’s Vice President of Reactor Development Jerry Hopwood. “We recently indicated to the Health and Safety Executive that we intend to seek design acceptance for the ACR-1000 Advanced CANDU Reactor and we plan to formally apply to be pre-licensed through the Generic Design Assessment process shortly.”

AECL’s ACR-1000 is currently being considered as the technology of choice for several Canadian markets. Built on the proven success of AECL’s CANDU nuclear technology, the ACR-1000 Advanced CANDU Reactor is a Gen III+, 1200 MWe class nuclear power plant with evolutionary improvements in safety, performance and reliability.

For the past 10 years AECL has been continuously building new nuclear reactors and has surpassed all major reactor vendors in completing six reactors on budget and on or ahead of schedule. AECL’s new Cernavoda Unit 2 CANDU 6 nuclear power plant owned by Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica (SNN) SA, Romania's nuclear public utility, sustained a fission reaction for the first time in early May of this year. CANDU 6 power plants are operated in five countries around the world by seven different utilities, and have consistently achieved outstanding safety and performance track records.
