Canada’s identity is idealized in a number of distinctive traits – the characteristics that set us apart from other cultures.

Canada is seen as the land of open spaces, rich wildlife, friendly people, peacekeepers, and bilingualism. It is associated with the Canadian flag, the beaver, the RCMP, and the maple leaf.

But beyond the official symbols of Canada, the world identifies us with specific products, linguistic particularities, cuisine and habits. Maple syrup is a favourite purchase that foreign tourists bring back home with them. Canadians are known for that rising intonation “eh” that calls for agreement from the other party – what many see as an indication of the Canadian character of conciliation. Hockey is one of our national sports (with lacrosse) and continues to fire up the passions of fans from coast to coast. Tourtière, Nanaimo bars, poutine and beaver tails along with salmon, game and fresh produce are all hallmarks of Canadian cuisine.

The following links do not give the definitive answer to the question "What defines a Canadian?", but they do provide some insight into the characteristics that make us unique.
