Transportation in Canada

Canada is known for its huge spaces and its relatively sparse population. Space is great. It means quality of life. But it also presents some challenges. The history of Canada is very closely linked to the possibility, or difficulty, of moving people and goods from one place to another – to the history of transportation.

The canoe and the kayak may be the most classic symbols of Canadian transportation. Developed and used in every day life by Aboriginal peoples, they were adopted by the European settlers and played an essential role in the exploration of Canada. Canoeing and kayaking have lost their status as a mainstream means of transportation but remain very popular recreational activities.

Early political leaders understood that one of the conditions to Canada’s existence was an effective transportation system, and the development of technology adapted to Canadian needs. They completed the Trans-Canada Railway, developed a shipbuilding industry, built our road system, and opened up air travel. Today, those initiatives and technologies, as well as the evolution of travel can be witnessed by visiting the many transportation museums across Canada.
