The Art Industries in Canada

The love of the art and the will to produce great work may be the two primary motivations for artists. But at the end, their work is brought before the public who pays admission in theatres and concert halls, buys books, paintings and sculptures, rents movies, and attends festivals. The result is that works of art take on a value. This is called the market, and people working in that market make up the industry.

Almost without exception, cultural industries in Canada depend on a variety of sources to sustain themselves – sales, endowments and private support, government funding, tax measures, as well as funding campaigns and other initiatives.

The success of artists in all disciplines and of Canadian cultural industries in general, is the result of strong and sustained support from people and private organisations, as well as public institutions that recognize that the talent of Canadian artists is not related to the size of their industry. The result is that artists and cultural organizations continue to flourish here in Canada and provide people with artistic products that reflect the Canadian experience, Canadian history, and Canadian cultural expression.
