The Business Side of Nature

Protecting the environment is big business.

The world’s struggle for a cleaner environment, including clean air and water, has created a massive $800 billion global environmental market. According to Statistics Canada, Canada’s $29-billion environmental market consists of about 8 000 firms across Canada – mostly in Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia.

Canada’s environmental industry creates employment. According to the 2004 Environmental Labour Market Report, the Canadian environmental workforce employs approximately 251 000 people.

These people develop environmental solutions. These include water treatment, waste management, clean energy, and geographic information systems.

Protecting the environment is also contributing to Canada’s $62.7-billion tourism industry. Ecotourism is a rapidly growing segment of the tourism industry. It’s a nature-based tourism based on respect for nature and the sustainable use of renewable resources. It also recognizes and respects local and indigenous cultures.

Environmental stewardship is part of environmentally-sound tourism. Best environmental management practices are incorporated into tourist operations.
