Tourism Organizations and Bureaus: Who to Ask?

Where can you find the world’s largest skating rink?

Canadian tourist bureaus can point you to the 7.8-kilometre Rideau Canal Skateway in Ottawa, Canada’s capital city. Guinness World Records recently declared the canal, which freezes in winter to form the skateway, the world’s largest skating rink.

You will find national, provincial, and municipal tourist bureaus throughout Canada, as well as on the Internet. These bureaus, such as that of Charlottetown, P.E.I., provide information about local hotels, restaurants, attractions, festivals, and history. For example, Charlottetown is called the birthplace of confederation because it hosted the first meeting leading to Canada’s confederation.

National tourism organizations, such as the Canadian Tourism Commission, also provide travel information to tourists. This government organization relays important air travel restrictions and passport information to travellers to Canada.

Local tourism organizations, such as chambers of commerce, provide regional tourism information. And Bed and Breakfasts are rich with local knowledge. One on Cape Breton's northern shore will tell you where the first Scottish settlers arrived in 1773.
