Canadian Historic Sites

The history of a country is built on the events that we can identify as those moments that changed our direction as a country and that shaped our future. We remember those moments as important historical dates and we celebrate, or mourn, the ones that are the most significant. The markers of history are composed of times, but also of places – our historical sites.

Canadian historical sites are actual witnesses to our past. They allow us to establish a connection and sometimes to actually immerse ourselves in the events and life of times gone by. They take on many shapes – from the covered bridges in Quebec, to the Halifax Citadel, to the monument that marks the discovery of Champlain’s astrolabe near the Ottawa River, to the Bar U Ranch in Alberta to SGang Gwaay, a once vibrant Haida village in British Columbia.

They may be sacred spaces, battlefields, archaeological sites, buildings or streetscapes – many have been declared national historic sites and more than a few have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. All tell their own story and have their particular place – literally – in the history of Canada.

In Canada the effort to preserve our historical sites is a collaborative effort that involves all levels of governments. Canadians recognize that our historic places capture the spirit of the country, weaving the fabric that brings us together as Canadians. It is a voyage in time, and everyone is invited to get on board.
