Phoenix Coyotes head coach Wayne Gretzky was fined $10,000 US from the NHL on Tuesday, an automatic fine levied because of an instigator penalty to defenceman Nick Boynton.
Boynton was suspended one game for instigating a fight with Steve Bernier 15:50 into the third period of Monday's 5-0 loss to the San Jose Sharks.

League rules dictate that instigator penalties result in one game suspensions, and a fine against the instigator's head coach — in this case, Gretzky.
Boynton, 28, has two assists and 30 penalty minutes in 15 games this season, his second in Phoenix.
The Nobleton, Ont., native has totalled 24 goals and 73 assists for 97 points with 565 penalty minutes in 373 NHL games since being drafted 21st by the Boston Bruins in 1999.
Boynton was traded to Phoenix, with a fourth-round draft pick, for Paul Mara and a third-round pick on June 26, 2006.
