Hargreaves out for England vs. Austria

Last Updated: Wednesday, November 14, 2007 | 11:44 AM ET

A tendinitis injury is keeping Calgary-born midfielder Owen Hargreaves out of England's exhibition match against Austria in Vienna on Friday.

Hargreaves, a star player with Manchester United in the English Premier League, will be rested against Austria in hopes that he will be ready to play in England's crucial Euro 2008 qualifying game against Croatia on Nov. 21.

Hargreaves, 26, started in Manchester United's 2-0 win over Blackburn on Sunday but was substituted in the 76th minute.

"Having discussed it with Manchester United, it was felt he should remain in Manchester for treatment until the weekend — with the emphasis on his fitness for the Croatia qualifier," read a statement from the English Football Association.

England could be eliminated by the time the Croatia games rolls around, though.

England currently sits in second place in its qualifying group, three points behind group leaders Croatia and two points ahead of third-place Russia. England will fail to qualify for Euro 2008 if Russia defeats Israel in a qualifier and Croatia avoids a loss against Macedonia on Saturday.

Hargreaves was born and raised in Calgary, but opted to represent England internationally. He is eligible for England because his father was born there. The Canadian has played for the English national team, including at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, for the past five years.

Hargreaves left Alberta when he was 16 to join Bayern Munich. During his time in Germany, Hargreaves helped Bayern win four Bundesliga (German first division) titles, two German Cups and one Champions League crown.

He signed a five-year deal with Manchester United this past summer, after Bayern sold the midfielder to the English club for $36.3 million Cdn.
