Meetings of Federal, Provincial and Territorial Ministers of Agriculture
As agriculture is a shared federal-provincial-territorial responsibility in Canada, agriculture ministers from across the country meet face-to-face a few times a year to talk about issues facing the agriculture and agri-food sector and to make decisions on how to address these issues. These meetings include a one or two-day annual conference, usually held in June, and one or two other day-long meetings.
The agriculture minister who hosts the annual conference co-chairs the conference and the other meetings that year with the federal minister of agriculture and agri-food. Ministers receive presentations from officials, discuss policy options, and make decisions that help build a stronger future for agriculture in Canada in the short-term and longer-term.
The annual conference and meetings usually conclude with a group photo of the ministers and a news conference or media availability. Ministers also issue a communiqué following each meeting which provides an overview of the topics they discussed and the key decisions they reached at the meeting.
