Shari Stein

Immigration Appeal Division
In April 2001, Ms Stein was appointed to the Immigration and Refugee Board
of Canada. She served for 11 months on the Refugee Protection Division.
She became a Member of the Immigration Appeal Division in March 2002.
In that capacity, as well as conducting hearings and Alternative Dispute
Resolutions (ADRs), Ms Stein designed new Member training materials under
IRPA. She has delivered numerous training sessions to new Members - both
on hearing preparation and conduct of a hearing. She has also designed
training material and delivered training to new Members and public servants
in ADR. Ms Stein was the lead facilitator of the Working Group on IAD
Innovation in the fall of 2005. She became the Acting Assistant Deputy
Chairperson of the Immigration Appeal Division in November 2006.
Ms Stein is a Barrister and Solicitor called to the Ontario Bar in 1981.
She began her career as a disability rights lawyer at the Advocacy Resource
Center for the Handicapped (ARCH). She specialized in human rights and
employment equity law and was instrumental in the development of the federal
employment equity legislation. In 1991, Ms Stein began working at Management
Board Secretariat as a Senior Policy Analyst developing employment equity
programs for the provincial public service. She managed projects such
as the Employment Equity Accountability for Results Initiative. In 1996,
Ms Stein became a mediator at the Financial Services Commission of Ontario.
Ms Stein's academic achievements include a B.A. (Honours, Sociology)
from McGill University; a M.S.W. from the University of British Columbia
and LL.B. and LL.M. (Alternative Dispute Resolution) degrees from Osgoode
Hall Law School.
