Strongfield durum program back by popular demand

March 23, 2007

Winnipeg – Due to customer interest, the CWB will offer an Identity Preserved Contract Program (IPCP) for Strongfield durum in 2007-08.

“This is a commercial IPCP, which means that it’s being offered to meet the demands of buyers with specific milling and end-use needs,” said CWB President and CEO Greg Arason. “In response to recent expressions of interest from customers in several countries—including the U.S., Italy, and Venezuela—we’re offering farmers 100-per-cent acceptance and delivery of contracted Strongfield tonnes.”

The following companies and producer car shippers will be handling the program: Weyburn Inland Terminal, Cargill, Great Sandhills Terminal, Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, Terminal 22, Louis Dreyfus, Prairie West Terminal, Mission Terminal, South West Terminal, Paterson, Global Foods, Agricore United, West Central Road and Rail, and James Richardson International. Incentives to farmers will vary by company.

In order to satisfy customer demands, the CWB will require companies to meet a standard of 95-per-cent varietal purity. Farmers are encouraged to check with their handling company as to whether it will meet this standard by requiring the use of certified seed. Millers and processors value Strongfield for its high protein, gluten strength and the bright yellow colour of the pasta it produces. For farmers, Strongfield is a high-yielding, high-protein variety with good disease resistance.

Controlled by western Canadian farmers, the CWB is the largest wheat and barley marketer in the world. One of Canada’s biggest exporters, the Winnipeg-based organization sells grain to over 70 countries and returns all sales revenue, less marketing costs, to farmers.
