CWB 2007-08 calendar winners showcase beauty of agriculture
July 27, 2007
Winnipeg – The CWB today announced the 15 winners of its popular annual crop year calendar photo contest. Grand-prize winner Heather Labrecque of Battleford, SK will have the winning photo of her father’s hands featured on the calendar cover.
The CWB received more than 400 photo submissions for the 2007-08 crop year calendar under the theme of “Farm Hands”. The CWB has been running the popular contest for the last 10 years and the calendar hangs in farm homes across Western Canada. It is being distributed with the current issue of Grain Matters, the CWB’s bimonthly publication for farmers, which arrives in 55,000 farmer mailboxes this week.
“The CWB crop-year calendar gives farmers the opportunity to showcase the beauty of agriculture through their eyes and experiences,” said Deanna Allen, CWB vice president, Farmer Relations and Public Affairs. “Collectively, these winning photographs weave together to tell the story of western Canadian agriculture through the hands of farmers and their families.”
Allen praised Labrecque’s literal interpretation of the “Farm Hands” theme in her photograph. Lebrecque said her father’s distinctive hands are the centre of many conversations.
“He has a hard time finding gloves to fit him, so he often goes without; resulting in many scrapes, cracks and bruises…my father’s rugged hands symbolize the character of a farmer…a doggedly determined, hardworking, ‘just-get-the-job-done’ persona,” said Lebrecque, who also won another prize for a photograph of her nephew checking cattle.
For the grand-prize winner, Labrecque receives a digital camera worth $500. Other winners receive a $50 gift certificate to a photography shop and will have their photos featured on a different month in the calendar.
