Directors holding accountability meetings in 28 communities

February 19, 2003

Winnipeg - Farmers who want a closer look at the CWB’s performance should plan on attending one of the corporate accountability meetings being held in 28 communities throughout Western Canada from March 3 to March 27. The meetings provide farmers, who control the CWB through the election of 10 of the 15 CWB directors, with an opportunity to voice opinions, ask questions and get answers from their elected directors and CWB staff.

“The CWB is not only farmer-controlled, it is farmer accountable,” said Ken Ritter, Chair of the board of directors. “The accountability meetings give directors the opportunity to address issues of importance to farmers and their farming operations. These meetings also give farmers a forum in their own communities at which they can voice their opinions.”

Discussion at the meetings will focus on the U.S. trade challenge, the potential introduction of genetically modified wheat, grain transportation issues and the producer payment options. Meetings will be held in Manitoba in Miami, Boissevain, McGregor, Oak River and Russell; in Saskatchewan in Redvers, Tisdale, Balcarres, Melville, Regina, Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Craik, North Battleford, Wilkie, Kindersley, and Swift Current, and in Alberta in Mundare, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Red Deer, Strathmore, Three Hills, High Level, Sedgewick, Falher, Spirit River and Barrhead.

The elected directors on the CWB’s board are:

Art Macklin - northwest Alberta and Peace River area
James Chatenay - west central Alberta
Larry Hill - southern Alberta and southwest Saskatchewan
Ian McCreary - central Saskatchewan
Ken Ritter - east central Alberta and west central Saskatchewan
Allen Oberg - northeast Alberta and northern Saskatchewan
Dwayne Anderson - east central Saskatchewan
Rod Flaman - south eastern Saskatchewan
Bill Nicholson - eastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba
Wilf Harder - south central Manitoba

Farmers can get more information about the corporate accountability meetings on the CWB Web site, www.cwb.ca or by calling 1-800-275-4292.

Controlled by western Canadian farmers, the CWB is the largest wheat and barley marketer in the world. As one of Canada’s biggest exporters, the Winnipeg-based organization sells grain to more than 70 countries and returns all sales revenue, less marketing costs, to Prairie farmers.
