Farmers get 98 per cent of revenue in 2001-02

March 14, 2003

Winnipeg - Farmers received over 98 per cent of the CWB's total revenues last year. The CWB's 2001-02 annual report notes that total revenues were $4.299 billion, with $4.222 billion returned to farmers through the pool accounts. Copies of the report, which provide all information on the CWB's earnings and expenditures, are now available.

"I encourage all farmers to examine our annual report," said Ken Ritter, chair of the board of directors. "We consider our annual report an important tool in ensuring we are accountable to the farmers of Western Canada."

Administrative costs decreased by seven per cent or $4.6 million in 2001-02, coming in at $61.3 million. Broken down, total administrative costs amount to about nine cents per bushel of grain. "We made a special effort to reduce expenses in light of the hardships of the Prairie drought, which had a significant impact on the crop grown in 2001," said Ritter. "Budget restraint has continued into the 2002-03 crop year."

This year's annual report highlights the CWB's six core values: creating value for farmers, delivering service excellence, developing great people, demonstrating integrity, being world class and embracing innovation and change. The report includes farmer testimonials and descriptions of programs designed to serve farmers' needs.

"Our values are not just words on a piece of paper," Ritter said. "They are the principles that guide how we act and the decisions we make."

Available in English and French, copies of the annual report can be ordered by e-mail (questions@cwb.ca) or by phoning the Business Centre at 1-800-275-4292.

Controlled by western Canadian farmers, the CWB is the largest wheat and barley marketer in the world. As one of Canada's biggest exporters, the Winnipeg-based organization sells grain to more than 70 countries and returns all sales revenue, less marketing costs, to Prairie farmers.
