CWB to honour farmers for lifetime contribution to Prairie agriculture

July 16, 2003

Winnipeg – The CWB has introduced a Farmer Recognition Certificate to honour the significant contribution to Prairie agriculture made by farmers who have been actively involved in grain farming for 50 years or more.

"This certificate was developed to recognize the contribution lifelong grain farmers have made," said Ken Ritter, Chair of the farmer-controlled board of directors. "Their commitment to Prairie agriculture has helped build and strengthen the economy of Western Canada and has contributed to the health and well-being of people around the world."

The first certificate has already been presented to Jack and Eileen Pawich, of Cartwright, Manitoba. Jack Pawich, 79, has been farming for 63 years. He recalls 1999 as being one of the toughest years. "We were flooded out – it rained 20 inches – and we had to harvest the next spring."

Any farmer who has grown grain since 1953 or earlier may apply for a certificate. A friend or family member may also apply on someone's behalf. In addition to completing the application, photocopies of supporting documentation from the first year of farming, such as a CWB permit book, grain company cash tickets, land ownership or land leases are also requested.

Each certificate names the farmer(s) being recognized and will be signed by Ken Ritter, board chair and by Adrian Measner, President and CEO. The certificate features a short inscription, a graphic image depicting grain farming on the Prairies and the CWB corporate seal on gold foil. A replica can be viewed on the CWB Web site, www.cwb.ca.

Copies of the application form are available in the 'Growing Grain' section on the CWB Web site or by phoning 1-800-275-4292.

Controlled by western Canadian farmers, the CWB is the largest wheat and barley marketer in the world. As one of Canada's biggest exporters, the Winnipeg-based organization sells grain to more than 70 countries and returns all sales revenue, less the costs of marketing, to Prairie farmers.
