Survey contains tips on malting barley production
(Barley Development Council news release)

Anyone interested in growing top-quality malting barley, and considering entering the 2002 Malting Barley Quality Competition (MBQC), can use the 2001 MBQC survey as a useful source of production information.

The 2001 MBQC survey results include some of the best management practices utilized by past competition winners. Now that the 2002 crop is in the ground, it is important for malting barley farmers to start thinking about their harvest strategies. Downgrading due to weathering, staining or improper harvesting causing excessive peeling or broken kernels can mean the difference between rejection and selection for malting purposes. Winners from last year's competition emphasize the importance of adjusting combine settings throughout the day and taking the time to cut out green patches in the field. More and more two-row malting barley farmers are moving to straight cutting to improve harvesting quality and to avoid sprouting and staining damage.

In the end, it all comes down to careful harvest management strategies to maintain the necessary quality characteristics that are critical for selection. Farmers looking for more information on the competition survey results or for entry details on this year's Malting Barley Quality Competition can visit www.cwb.ca or the Brewing and Malting Barley Research Institute's Web site at www.bmbri.ca.
