CWB expands scholarship program to U of Lethbridge

April 14, 2004

Winnipeg - The CWB today announced it has expanded its undergraduate scholarship program to include the University of Lethbridge. This brings the number of universities receiving funding for scholarships from the CWB to four - the University of Lethbridge, the University of Alberta, the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Manitoba.

"We are proud to invest in the future of Western Canada's agriculture industry by funding education," said Ken Ritter, chair of the CWB's farmer-controlled board of directors. "I am pleased to extend our program to the University of Lethbridge, a centre for ongoing research into important issues facing the industry."

Students enrolled in the Agricultural Biotechnology and Agricultural Studies programs at the University of Lethbridge will be eligible for the scholarships, which are awarded on the basis of academic performance. Two students entering their third year at U of L this fall will receive $1,500 scholarships and two students entering their fourth year will receive $1,750.

In total, 29 agricultural students will receive CWB scholarships this year; the recipients will be announced in the fall. The scholarships are funded from farmers' uncashed payment cheques.

Controlled by western Canadian farmers, the CWB is the largest wheat and barley marketer in the world. As one of Canada's biggest exporters, the Winnipeg-based organization sells grain to more than 70 countries and returns all sales revenue, less marketing costs, to Prairie farmers.
