CWB announces Master Durum Grower competition winners
Swift Current, Saskatchewan - The winners of the Canadian Wheat
Board's first Master Durum Grower Competition were announced today
at the CWB's Customer Connection Durum Challenge II in Swift
Current, SK.
Mark and Karen Stock of Hazlet, SK were named as first place
winners, while Stephen H. Metz of Gull Lake, SK received second
place for his durum wheat sample. The top five finalists include:
Maxwell Kirkpatrick, Cabri, SK; John Kutz, Elrose, SK; and Daniel
Ruest, Admiral, SK.
Approximately 300 samples were submitted to the CWB for judging.
Samples were judged based on quality factors including test weight,
protein content, vitreous kernel soundness and color.
"This is the first time the CWB has held the Master Durum Grower
Competition and we are very pleased with the high quality of durum
samples sent in by western Canadian farmers. It was hard to select
the top two samples, but I wish to congratulate the Stock family
and Stephen Metz on their achievements. I'd also like to thank all
of the farmers who submitted samples to the competition," said Earl
Geddes, Vice-President of Farmer Relations at the CWB.
As first place winners, the Stocks will receive an expense-paid
weekend for two to Montreal, including a pasta plant tour and
attendance at a sporting/cultural event. The first and second place
winners will be invited to participate in a Canadian International
Grains Institute Program where they will meet customers from around
the world. Grisspasta Products Ltd. of Montreal and the Canadian
Pasta Manufacturers Association were co-sponsors of the first place
prize, while the Canadian Grain Commission was co-sponsor of the
second place prize.
The announcement was made at the CWB's Customer Connection meeting,
the first of a series of five such day-long meetings being held
this January and February in Western Canada. The Customer
Connection meetings permit the CWB to share agronomic and market
information with farmers.
Headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the Canadian Wheat Board's
mandate is to create value for Prairie farmers by being an
innovative world leader in grain marketing. Controlled and managed
