Designated barley initials raised
Winnipeg -- The CWB today announced that the Government of Canada has approved increases to the 2001-02 initial payments for two- and six-row designated barley.
Effective September 5, 2001, initial payments for all designated barley will increase by $16 per tonne. Payments for each of the various classes of designated barley are listed below. The total payment is based on the value of grain in store at Vancouver or the St. Lawrence.
A complete listing of payments for all grades in dollars per tonne and dollars per bushel is posted on the CWB's Web site (under the Payments link) at www.cwb.ca
Farmers who delivered designated barley to the CWB between August 1, 2001 and September4, 2001 will receive an adjustment payment. The payments will be mailed on September 14 or received by direct deposit on September 11. Farmers who wish to defer payments have until September 5 to notify the CWB by calling 1-800-275-4292.
Initial payments are guaranteed by the federal government and are paid to farmers when they deliver grain. This is the first adjustment to the 2001-02 initial payment.
The CWB monitors pool account activity throughout the crop year. Recommendations for further adjustments to the initial payments will be made when sales and market conditions warrant.
Initial payments should not be confused with monthly Pool Return Outlooks (PROs) which are the CWB's estimates of total pool year returns.
Controlled by western Canadian farmers, the CWB is the largest wheat and barley marketer in the world. As one of Canada's biggest exporters, the Winnipeg-based organization sells grain to more than 70 countries and returns all sales revenue, less marketing costs, to Prairie farmers.
