Program Description

The Organizational Development in Media Arts: Grants for New Initiatives, New Models and Emerging Organizations Program serves two objectives:

  • provide Canadian organizations that do not receive operating* grants in media arts and Canadian non-profit collectives with Annual Funding to cover costs related to administration and other activities in the field of media arts, and
  • be the point of entry for new organizations applying for operating* support programs in media arts.

(* The following programs are considered operating support programs in media arts: Assistance to Media Arts Production Organizations, Annual Assistance for Programming, Annual Assistance to Distribution Organizations, Annual Assistance to Cinematheques, and Annual Assistance to Media Arts Festivals.)

This program is intended to assist Canadian organizations and collectives that are developing or providing activities that support the practice of media arts, with particular emphasis on the quality of activities, with a view to:

  • support the research, creation, development, production, dissemination and/or distribution of independent media artworks by Canadian artists
  • support the artistic and professional development of Canadian media artists, and
  • develop other services, facilities or activities that advance Canadian independent media arts.

The Canada Council for the Arts defines the media arts as works in film, video, audio and new media, and it views independent productions as those over which directors/artists maintain complete creative and editorial control, as well as a significant percentage of the copyright.

Where applicable, organizations and collectives supported through the Canada Council’s Media Arts Section must pay appropriate fees to participating artists, as determined by the various associations, unions and distribution organizations within each practice. You should consult these sources if you require information about artist fee rates.

The Organizational Development in Media Arts: Grants for New Initiatives, New Models and Emerging Organizations Program provides two categories of support:

Category 1 – New Initiatives, New Models - This category of the program is available to organizations and collectives that provide support to the practice of media arts but do not meet the eligibility requirements of the following programs: Assistance to Media Arts Production Organizations, Annual Assistance for Programming, Annual Assistance to Cinematheques, and Annual Assistance to Media Arts Festivals. Organizations with alternative operating models (for example, collectives or media groups associated with organizations from other disciplines) may also apply to this program to cover costs related to media arts initiatives.

Category 2 – Emerging Organizations - This category of the program is intended for media arts organizations that have just been incorporated, are in their early phases and/or are not yet eligible for the following programs: Assistance to Media Arts Production Organizations, Annual Assistance for Programming, Annual Assistance to Distribution Organizations, Annual Assistance to Cinematheques, and Annual Assistance to Media Arts Festivals.

These organizations may apply for a grant to cover their administrative costs and other costs related to their activities. Applications will be assessed on the basis of this program’s assessment criteria and priorities, and the extent to which the organization’s planned activities correspond to the production needs of the groups they serve. Such organizations may submit a maximum of two consecutive applications for this category. If they are not awarded a grant, they must wait one year before applying again.

Strategic Priorities

In keeping with the strategic priorities identified by the Canada Council for the Arts, this program strongly encourages organizations to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to fostering and developing the artistic practice of Aboriginal artists and culturally diverse artists.
