Message from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, on the occasion of Remembrance Day – November 11, 2007

November 9, 2007

We shall remember once again this year, and in so doing give meaning to the poppy we wear over our hearts. This gesture, which we make every November 11th, reminds us of the incredible sacrifice made by thousands of men and women, driven solely by the conviction that peace and freedom are values that must be defended at all costs.

During the two world wars from 14-18 and 39-45, the conflict in Korea and today’s missions in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the world, our military personnel have answered the call with an exemplary and boundless sense of duty, courage and generosity.

Remembrance Day offers us a window into their motivation, the feeling of being able to help build peace, restore stability and free women, men and children from the yoke of tyranny. Let us proudly pay tribute today to these brave souls.

Michaëlle Jean
