Mandate

Employment Equity is the term developed by Judge Rosalie Silberman Abella, Commissioner of the Royal Commission on Equality in Employment (1984), to describe a distinct Canadian process for achieving equality in all aspects of employment.

The goal of Employment Equity is to:

  • eliminate employment barriers for the four designated groups identified in the Employment Equity Act : women, persons with disabilities, Aboriginal people, members of visible minorities;
  • remedy past discrimination in employment opportunities and prevent future barriers;
  • improve access and distribution throughout all occupations and at all levels for members of the four designated groups;
  • foster a climate of equity in the organization.

The Employment Equity Office exists to facilitate recruiting, integration and promotion of women, members of visible minority groups, aboriginal people and people with disabilities, so that the CBC can achieve a workforce which reflects the diversity of Canadian society.

To fulfill this mandate the Employment Equity Office:

  • ensures the creation and implementation of programs to assist managers in hiring, managing and developing members of the designated groups;
  • promotes elimination of the physical, cultural and social obstacles in the workplace faced by people from designated groups;
  • communicates with CBC staff, stakeholder organizations and the Canadian public about progress towards a balanced workforce;
  • prepares the annual report on Employment Equity for submission to Human Resources Development Canada as required by the Employment Equity Act.
