Records of the Jamaican Canadian Association to be donated to Library and Archives Canada

Ottawa, November 25, 2005 - Librarian and Archivist of Canada Mr. Ian E. Wilson announced today that the Jamaican Canadian Association will donate significant archival material to Library and Archives Canada at a special ceremony on November 27, 2005, in Toronto. The material is part of an important collection of archival records gathered by Dr. Vincent Conville during his research on the Association's history.

The donation consists of documents relating to the Association's constitution, its activities between 1963 and 2002, its correspondence with various levels of government, its committee, conference and financial reports, and its research notes on multiculturalism.

"To be recognized by Library and Archives Canada is very positive, given the work we have undertaken and the history we have as an organization in Canada," said Ms. Sandra Carnegie-Douglas, President of the Jamaican Canadian Association. "Not only is this an important marker in recognizing the contribution of our organization to the Canadian and Caribbean communities, it will also contribute to the country's national memory."

"The Jamaican Canadian Association fonds is a record of the achievements of its leaders and members for future researchers and historians," added Mr. Ian E. Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada. "We would like to encourage other members of the Association to transfer their papers to Library and Archives Canada, so that their experiences and stories can be shared with all Canadians."

The event willl be held on Sunday, November 27, 2005 at 2:15 p.m. at the Jamaican Canadian Centre, 995 Arrow Road in Toronto, Ontario.

Established in 1962 , the Jamaican Canadian Association is a registered charitable organization committed to identifying and resonding to the needs of the African Canadian and Carribean communities in the Greater Toronto Area and working in partnership with other organizations who share similar values and goals.
