Library and Archives Canada Celebrates Black History Month Launch of Encre Noire/Black Ink Exhibition

Ottawa, February 1, 2006 - As a tribute to Black History Month, Library and Archives Canada is proud to host the official launch of Encre Noire/Black Ink, a travelling exhibition showcasing the wealth and variety of Black literature in Canada.

The donation consists of documents relating to the Association's constitution, its activities between 1963 and 2002, its correspondence with various levels of government, its committee, conference and financial reports, and its research notes on multiculturalism.

The launch will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at 6:00 p.m. in the Auditorium of Library and Archives Canada, in Ottawa, in the presence of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and His Excellency Jean-Daniel Lafond. The evening's program will feature readings by renowned authors Lawrence Hill, Cecil Foster, George Elliott Clarke and Jan J. Dominique.

Encre Noire/Black Ink offers a collection of writings which centre on three themes: Ideologies, Foreign Voices and Canadian Writers. The works have been chosen for their popularity, notoriety, and literary merit. The exhibition's three themes illustrate how African and Caribbean communities in Canada have flourished and highlight the strong ties that unite them.

A joint initiative of the Multiculturalism Program of Canadian Heritage and Images Interculturelles, Encre Noire/Black Ink was created to commemorate 400 years of Black presence in Canada and the 10th anniversary of Black History Month. This travelling exhibition can be seen in Winnipeg, Edmonton, Halifax and Montréal during Black History Month.

In Ottawa, Encre Noire/Black Ink can be viewed from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily at Library and Archives Canada, 395 Wellington Street, until February 4, 2006. Admission is free.
