Marilyn Monroe, Robert Goulet, Fred Varley and Glenn Gould--All part of the Jock Carroll Fonds donated to Library and Archives Canada

(OTTAWA, March 10, 2006) - Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is pleased to announce a major donation of more than 21,000 photographs, personal files, manuscripts and other invaluable material belonging to famed Canadian photojournalist Jock Carroll. The material was donated recently by Angus Carroll in keeping with his father's wish to have his files preserved in their totality, as an important record of Canadian history.

Born in Toronto in 1919, John Alexander "Jock" Carroll was a photographer, writer, editor, foreign correspondent and author of seven books, the most famous being The Shy Photographer, a novel based on the magazine business. He started his career after the Second World War, writing for Colliers, Maclean's and Sports Illustrated before working in the Toronto bureau of the Montreal-based Weekend Magazine, a national weekly newspaper supplement and later at the Toronto Telegram.

For almost fifty years, Carroll covered a wide variety of topics, from Canada's involvement in the Korean War to the activities of Canadian and American celebrities to the daily lives and concerns of Canadians, making his material a greatly anticipated addition to LAC's photography collection.

Jock Carroll may be known best for the photos he took of Marilyn Monroe as a young starlet on the film set of Niagara (1953), which were published after her death in the book Falling for Marilyn (1996). In addition to the drafts of his literary works, Carroll preserved many of the memos and letters he wrote to his colleagues and superiors, providing a unique insight into the working life of a photojournalist.

"The donation of this fonds, which represents approximately 12 metres of textual documents, 21,000 photographs, first-edition books and audiovisual components, will ensure that Jock Carroll's fascinating career will be better known to Canadians," noted Ian E. Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada.
