This Year's Read Up On It Showcases Aboriginal Stories

Library and Archives Canada launches the 2006-2007 edition of its Children's Literature Service publication

(Ottawa, November 22, 2006) - All the Stars in the Sky, The Dream Catcher and Mouse Woman and the Mischief- Makers are some of the titles featured in the Library and Archives Canada 2006-2007 edition of Read Up On It. The theme for this year's popular, bilingual annotated bibliography on Canadian children's literature is Aboriginal stories. The new edition was launched last week at Library and Archives Canada during a presentation on When the Spirits Dance, the latest book by First Nations writer Larry Loyie with writer and editor Constance Brissenden.

Many Canadian books for young readers are written, illustrated or recounted by people of Aboriginal background. In addition, a number of non-Aboriginal authors and illustrators draw inspiration from Aboriginal artists and Elders to create their own works. The books selected for this edition represent a variety of literary genres and cover a range of time periods, from early encounters between European explorers and Aboriginal peoples to the present day. Some of the authors featured in this year's edition include C. J. Taylor, Tomson Highway and Theresa Meuse-Dallien.

"Since 1989, the Children's Literature Service of Library and Archives Canada has produced this publication to promote the joy of reading and to raise awareness of Canadian children's literature among young people," states Ian E. Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada. "This year, Read Up On It highlights fascinating Aboriginal stories and the beautiful illustrations that accompany them, and makes known to all Canadians this rich part of Canadian literature."

Read Up On It presents a selection of books for young readers, chosen from the more than 140,000 items in the Children's Literature collection of Library and Archives Canada. Each year, Read Up On It reaches close to 25,000 teachers, librarians and parents who channel the pleasure of books and reading to young people.
