A committee of western Canadian producers that was formed in January 2001 produced the report. The committee was mandated to provide recommendations to the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) regarding the producer composition of the Western Grain Standards Committee (WGSC). Their recommendations would enable producer organizations to nominate twelve producer positions, to clarify their roles and responsibilities, and to put in place a structure of subcommittees to reflect the needs of specific commodity groups: wheat, barley and other cereals, special crops and oilseeds.

The CGC is supportive of the recommendations, but we want to obtain feedback from producers and the industry before proceeding with implementation. Our objectives are to ensure that producers are fairly represented and that the WGSC is positioned to continue functioning effectively in a rapidly changing environment.
