Aboriginal Emerging Writers Residencies

Deadline

1 June 2007

Program Description

This is one component of the Grants to Aboriginal Writers, Storytellers and Publishers program. The objectives of the Aboriginal Emerging Writers Residencies component are to:

  • encourage the artistic development of emerging Aboriginal writers in a supportive, professional artistic and cultural environment
  • encourage the development of Aboriginal publishing, and
  • strengthen Aboriginal literary creation, in Aboriginal languages, in Canada.

This component of the program is an initiative of three groups: the Writing and Publishing Section of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Aboriginal Arts Program of The Banff Centre, and the En’owkin Centre.

Successful applicants will participate in a two-week, intensive writing program at The Banff Centre, in Alberta. The program will be led by an established Aboriginal writer. It will include instructional workshops, individual studio writing time, guest speakers, Internet and archival research, and a cultural component.

The writers who receive grants will undertake a specific writing project while participating in a program that is designed to refresh and refine their writing skills. Successful applicants will learn:

  • about writing techniques, methods, genres, and cultural and storytelling protocols and traditions
  • methods of increasing the relevance of their writing to their communities, and
  • innovative strategies for getting their work published.
