The Canadian Health Network (CHN) is committed to protecting the privacy of its visitors. The purpose of this notice is to explain when and how personal information can be used.

The CHN subscribes to all of the current laws that govern privacy on the Internet. This means that the CHN, by virtue of being federally funded, needs to subscribe to the Federal Privacy Act. In addition, by virtue of its relationship with the non-governmental sector, there is a need to comply with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act. Additionally, the CHN complies with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat Cookie Guidelines.(For additional information on Cookies see www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/clf-nsi/5/cookie-temoin/cookie-temoin_e.asp.)

The CHN is not responsible for the content or the privacy policies of the websites to which it may link.

What information is collected by the CHN and how is it used?

The CHN does not automatically collect any specific personal information, such as name, phone number or e-mail address. It would only obtain this type of information if supplied through an e-mail or subscription. The CHN does not disclose, give or sell any personal information about visitors to the website. Only the minimum amount of personal information is used by the CHN at the Public Health Agency of Canada and Affiliate organizations for the purposes of responding to requests or to ensure the security of the system. No information is used to create individual profiles, or disclosed to anyone else without previous consent.

The CHN employs software programs to monitor network traffic to identify unauthorized attempts to upload or change information, or otherwise cause damage. This software receives and records the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the computer that has contacted the website, the date and time of the visit, and the pages visited. There is no attempt to link these addresses with the identity of individuals visiting the site unless an attempt to damage it has been detected.

Unless specifically noted otherwise, neither electronic systems nor e-mail are secure information transmission methods. It is not recommended to transmit sensitive personal information electronically.

Cookies

A "cookie" is a file that may be placed on a hard drive without the visitor's knowledge by a website to allow it to monitor their use of the site.

Session cookies are part of the CHN Web Content Management System and reside on the web browser. They have no expiry date since they expire as soon as the visitor closes the web browser. Session cookies remember information only for as long as the visitor operates the web browser in a single "session" (or "sitting"). Session cookies may be used by the CHN to determine information such as what parts of a website are popular, how long people stay on certain sections of a website, and what browsers people are using.

Persistent cookies have an expiry date, are stored on a visitor's hard drive and are read by the visitor's browser each time the visitor visits the Web site that sent the Cookie. It is possible for the Web site that created the Cookie to extend the expiry date without notice to the visitor. They will remain there until the set date has expired or until the visitor has deleted the file. The CHN occasionally uses persistent cookies to track how visitors use the site or to determine sites previously visited. When the CHN is using persistent cookies, a special privacy notice statement will appear on this page.

Healthy Lunches to Go Tour - Special Privacy Notice Statement

The Healthy Lunches to Go Tour uses persistent cookies to monitor how visitors use this site to determine what pages and features are generating the greatest response. Cookies will expire after one month and will only be used by Government of Canada personnel and those authorized to provide assistance with site usage analysis. Please note that information collected by persistent cookies will not be connected to any personal information that you provide for the interactive components of the site (e.g., pledge for better health, e-postcards, etc.). Necessary measures have been taken to protect the confidentiality of the information that is collected and all personal information is protected under the Privacy Act.
