Canada's New Government Delivers on Its Promise to Review Procurement Policy

February 27, 2007

Ottawa - The Honourable Vic Toews, President of the Treasury Board, today released the results of the independent review of the government's procurement policy.  The review was first announced as a key commitment in the Federal Accountability Action Plan.

"We have delivered on our promise of an independent review of government procurement.  I would like to thank Mr. Robert Dye for his contribution," said Minister Toews.  "This report will be instrumental as we strengthen government procurement, making it more open, fair and transparent."

On July 20, 2006, Mr. Dye was named to review the draft procurement policy and provide recommendations to strengthen it.  In his report Mr. Dye provides an overview of the government procurement process and lists a number of recommendations to improve the draft procurement policy currently in development.  The report also identifies other opportunities to streamline procurement.

"We have already included many of the recommendations in this report into the draft policy.  Once it is in place, this renewed policy will further strengthen accountability and enhance oversight," said Minister Toews.

The Report on the Review of the Draft Treasury Board Policy on Managing Procurement is available on the Treasury Board web site at www.tbs-sct.gc.ca

This announcement is part of the implementation of the Federal Accountability Act, which received Royal Assent on December 12, 2006. Through the Federal Accountability Act and its accompanying Action Plan, Canada's New Government has brought forward specific measures to strengthen accountability in government.  More information on the Federal Accountability Act and Action Plan is available at www.accountability.gc.ca
