Following the death of their mother in January 2005, Jaret and David Belliveau drove from their family home in Moncton to the West Coast in a refurbished Volkswagen van that Jaret bought for $700. He sunk more money into a good stereo and pilfered leather seats from an old Saab that he owned to prepare the vehicle for long-distance travel.

From last September to November, the VW carried the brothers across Canada. Expect Delays, an exhibition of Jaret’s photos from the trip, chronicles the journey of self-discovery that they experienced along the way. The series, showing July 4 to 15 at Halifax’s Anna Leonowens Gallery, begins with David visiting his mother’s grave to retrieve a bandana he left in tribute to her.
