The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, along with The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, announced a new funding package for VIA Rail Canada Inc. in Toronto on October 11, 2007. The funding, which will revitalize inter-city passenger rail services in Canada, totals $691.9 million over the next five years.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty met with his G8 counterparts near Potsdam, Germany on May 18 and 19, 2007. They discussed climate change, financial markets issues including hedge funds and the important work of the World Bank.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty traveled to Charlottetown, PEI on March 29th to tour Cabinetmaster Architectural Woodwork Ltd., a Canadian success story, and to talk about the importance of small and medium businesses to Canada's national economy. After a speech in Montréal before the Conseil du patronat du Québec, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty visited a new ethanol plant in Varennes, Quebec, on March 28, 2007, underscoring Budget 2007 support of $2 billion for the development of a Canadian renewable fuels industry. In this case, the fuel is made from corn. Here the Minister is joined by Robert Gallant, President and CEO of GreenField Ethanol, at the new GreenField Ethanol plant in Varennes.

Federal Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty and Industry Minister Maxime Bernier were in New York on March 23rd as Minister Flaherty addressed the Canadian Association of New York. Minister Flaherty’s speech focused on Budget 2007 that he delivered earlier in the week, especially the topic of building a Canadian Advantage in global capital markets.

On the day before presenting his Budget 2007 on March 19 to the House of Commons Finance Minister Jim Flaherty marked the tradition of new footgear, and his support for small business, by purchasing a pair of Canadian-made skates for his son John at "Blades," an independent sporting goods retailer in Whitby, Ontario, while his wife, Christine Elliott, looked on.

The fund is part of a global effort to develop vaccines to benefit the world's poorest nations. (See February 9, 2007 news release.)
