130 Youth to Present Videos to the Governor General at Rideau Hall

October 15, 2007

OTTAWA—Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, will host a meeting at Rideau Hall, where 130 young people aged 15 to 17 will present her with the results of their work. These young people are taking part in the “Flash Drive: A Capital Assignment” youth forum in the nation’s capital. Videos on the environment, cultural diversity and the youth culture will be screened on October 18, 2007, at 9:30 a.m., in the Rideau Hall Ballroom. A discussion on the themes addressed will follow.

The three-day forum is an initiative of the National Capital Commission (NCC) in partnership with Historica Encounters, Canada’s largest youth forum. Young people from across Canada will be grouped together with special guests to take part in discussions and produce short videos reflecting their perspectives on the themes provided. The discussions will then continue on the Governor General’s Web site, www.citizenvoices.gg.ca, where forums on these themes will be open to the public.

The youth forum is being held in connection with the 150th anniversary of the choice of Ottawa as Canada’s capital. The Governor General is patron of this anniversary, which commemorates the year 1857 and events leading to this historic decision by Her Majesty Queen Victoria. This anniversary is being marked by activities and celebrations put on by the NCC, the cities of Ottawa and Gatineau, festival organizers and federal and tourism partners from the capital region.
