Reunion: An Exhibit of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia presented at Rideau Hall

October 16, 2007

OTTAWA–Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond are pleased to welcome to Rideau Hall a new exhibit entitled Reunion: Nova Scotian Military Families Reflect, curated by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (AGNS). This exhibit showcases the feelings and emotions of families bidding farewell to mothers, fathers, sons and daughters, adjusting to changes in their daily lives, and then celebrating the safe return of their loved ones. It is presented in the Ambassadors Room until December 2007.

Reunion tells the story of homecoming and features 19 works of art created by nine adults and eight children from military families in Halifax. Whether through paintings or drawings, these works tell stories that are important and relevant to all of us.

This exhibition came to life thanks to a workshop conducted by the AGNS in 2006 with families from the Halifax Military Family Resource Centre. These families were invited to react to the famous painting Entrance to Halifax Harbour by A. Y. Jackson, a Canadian War Records artist. The artwork chronicles the events of the Canadian fleet steaming into Halifax Harbour in 1919 with the troops returning home at the conclusion of the First World War. The Jackson painting, which is on loan from the Tate Gallery, in London, remains on view at the AGNS and was the inspiration behind the exhibition now on display at the governor general’s official residence.

Visitors to Rideau Hall will have the chance to view this temporary exhibit as part of the residence and art tours. The tours of the residence are offered Saturdays and Sundays, from 12 noon to 4 p.m., until October 28, and on all other days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by reservation only. Art tours are offered by reservation only.
