Governor General to Receive Symbolic First Poppy of the 2007 National Poppy CampaignOctober 23, 2007 OTTAWA—Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada and Patron of the Royal Canadian Legion, will receive the symbolic first poppy in advance of Remembrance Day from the Honorary Grand President of the Legion, Mr. Charles Belzile (Lieutenant-General Retired) and Dominion President, Mr. Jack Frost. The ceremony will take place on Thursday, October 25, 2007, at 10 a.m., at Rideau Hall. Each year, about 18 million poppies are distributed in communities across Canada. Officially adopted by Canada in 1921 by the Great War Veterans Association (the predecessor of the Royal Canadian Legion), poppies are recognized as the national symbol of remembrance of the 117 000 men and women who have served our country in wartime and in peacetime. This year’s official campaign begins on October 26, 2007.
