Electronic Commerce in Canada

Consumer Information

Informed consumers facilitate the protection of personal information. When informed consumers contribute their voices to the growing demand for privacy protection, businesses respond by adopting appropriate codes of practice and using privacy-enhancing technologies.

Consumers should be aware of consequences involved in making personal information available, their rights to privacy, and ways they can protect themselves against privacy threats.

The Media Awareness Network provides information for parents and teachers on information privacy, including an overview of Federal legislation that governs this.

An excellent source of information on privacy in the digital economy is Industry Canada's Consumer Connection, where you can obtain the Canadian Code of Practice for Consumer Protection in Electronic Commerce.

For consumer information on Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act and other privacy related information for individuals see the Privacy Commissioner of Canada's web site.
