Climatology

Weather elements such as temperature and rainfall are measured and averaged, typically over a 30-year period, to produce a description of the climate for a city, a region or even the entire globe. 

Environment Canada maintains an archive of climate observations, studies trends and variability, and examines related phenomena such as global circulation patterns and atmospheric composition. It uses this information to develop sophisticated models for predicting future climate scenarios.

This section includes an archive of Canadian climate data, descriptions of Canada's climate on a season-by-season basis, and information on the processes that influence climate.

  • Atlantic Climate Centre

    This centre provides climate and consultation services in the Atlantic Region. It publishes summaries of recent data and offers specific services to the public, as well as to the legal, scientific, educational and engineering communities.

  • Climate Research

    Climate research at Environment Canada is focused on providing an understanding of Canada's climate and how it is changing. Research efforts include developing climate models, analyzing climate tends and variability, and understanding climate systems.

    This bulletin is a new forum for presenting national and regional climate analyses (temperature and precipitation only at this time) for Canada.

  • Cryosphere System in Canada

    The cryosphere is the portion of the global climate system that consists of ice masses and snow deposits. Find out about snow, sea ice, lake ice, glaciers and ice caps, and permafrost and frozen ground in Canada.

    This archive contains over a century and a half of Canadian weather data including information on temperature, precipitation, atmospheric pressure, wind speed, cloud types, soil temperature, evaporation, and solar radiation, as well as occurrences of thunderstorms and other weather phenomena.
