Man accused in Saskatoon homicide appears in court

Last Updated: Tuesday, November 13, 2007 | 6:29 PM CT

The man accused of second-degree murder in the weekend death of Russell Tanner made a brief court appearance in Saskatoon Tuesday.

Tanner, 37, died Sunday after he was rushed to hospital with serious injuries following a fight at his home in the 500 block of Avenue I South, police said.

Brent Tomlinson, 42, was charged Monday in connection with the death.

Tanner's brother, Mark, said Tomlinson and Tanner were longtime friends who had grown up together in Brandon, Manitoba.

"He was his roommate," said Mark Tanner. "They'd known each other for years. I know the guy. And when they drank, they didn't get along."

Mark Tanner said the two men often got into fights but efforts to get the two men to live apart failed.

Tomlinson is scheduled to appear in court again later in November.

An autopsy will be conducted on Russell Tanner Wednesday. He will be buried in Brandon next week.
