CANtex Canadian Textiles Program

As part of the Government of Canada's expenditure restraint measures announced on September 25, funding for the CANtex program has been reduced by a total of $24.9 million over the next two years.

There is still CANtex program funding available to help Canada’s textile industry improve its productivity and refocus production on higher value-added products.

The government will continue to work with industry stakeholders to address the challenges facing our apparel and textile industries, and to promote new opportunities.

Building Business Competitiveness

For Canadian textile manufacturers, competitiveness is key to long-term success in today's global marketplace.

CANtex was initially a three-year, $26.7 million initiative introduced by the Government of Canada in 2004 to help Canadian textile manufacturing firms become more competitive and ready to take advantage of new opportunities. Additional funding of $50 million was announced in December 2004. This brings total funding to $76.7 million and extends the program to March 31, 2010.

The additional $50 million in funding is for repayable contributions aimed at textile companies who are currently engaged in traditional, lower value-added textile manufacturing operations and who want to diversify at least a portion of their production into higher value-added textiles for niche markets. For that purpose, equipment costs are eligible, as are costs that were already eligible under the first ($26.7million) initiative.

CANtex builds on the record of the Canadian Apparel and Textile Industries Program (CATIP), which has funded close to 400 projects to assist apparel and textile companies to enhance their productivity, lower costs, improve efficiency, and find new markets for their products.

Program changes effective September 30, 2005

CANtex will consist of two components: a Productivity Component and a Transformative Component.

The Productivity Component is a continuation of CANtex assistance for textile manufacturing companies undertaking initiatives to improve their production efficiencies. Companies may continue to submit applications under this component.

The new Transformative Component is for textile manufacturing companies wanting to transform at least a portion of their current textile production from lesser value-added products to higher value-added textile products targeted at growth niche markets. Applications will be received beginning September 30, 2005, for projects under the Transformative Component.
