A brand new pear, known as HW614, has been developed by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada scientists at Vineland Station in the Niagara region, Ontario, and it needs a name! AAFC is inviting Canadians to help by voting for their favourite name.
Description:
- The HW614 is a cross between the Bartlett and the variety US56112-146.
- The fruit has an oval shape with a narrower neck similar in size to the Bartlett.
- The pear has smooth, yellow-green skin with light red colourings in some years.
- The flesh is cream-white flesh with a firm texture.
- The fruit ripens in late fall and stores very well for 10 to 12 weeks, extending the availability of fresh Canadian pears until Christmas.
- The tree produces a lot of fruit and is fire blight tolerant.
