Cogen replaces Lites as Stars president

Last Updated: Wednesday, November 14, 2007 | 12:11 PM ET

The Dallas Stars made another major front office move Wednesday, naming Jeff Cogen as the team's new president.

Cogen replaces Jim Lites, who is moving full-time to Hicks Sports Marketing Group.

"The Stars franchise and the Stars fans need a man like Cogen, and I need Jim Lites working full-time on the national and international expansion and marketing of our properties," Dallas Stars owner Tom Hicks said in a statement.

Cogen had been serving as president of baseball's Texas Rangers, which is also owned by Hicks.

Cogen served as Rangers president for the past three years. Prior to his stint with the Rangers, he served as chief operating officer for the Florida Panthers from 2001-2004.

His appointment comes one day after the firing of Stars general manager Doug Armstrong and the promotion of Brett Hull and Les Jackson to interim co-general managers.

Dallas, who sports a 7-7-3 record, is coming off a huge loss to Los Angeles on Saturday.

Ahead 4-0 heading into the third, the Stars allowed five goals in the final period of regulation en route to an overtime defeat.

It was the team's fifth loss in their last seven games, a span that has included a pair of one-sided losses to Phoenix.

The Stars have not been able to parlay regular-season achievement into playoff success in recent years.

Dallas has finished with no fewer than 97 points the past four seasons but has not made it past the second round of the playoffs.

Armstrong took some criticism in the off-season for not making any major free-agent moves after Dallas scored just 12 times in seven playoff games, falling to the Vancouver Canucks in the first round.
