Office of the Chief Economist

The Office of the Chief Economist reports and advises on international trade and economic issues, including global, regional and sectoral trends and developments; and undertakes trade and economic research and analysis in support of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada's various functions: trade and investment policy, including negotiation of international agreements; international business development; and trade litigation.

	Monthly Trade Report - September 2007 Merchandise exports dropped 2.3% to $37.7 billion in September while imports rose 2.2% to reach $35.1 billion, narrowing Canada’s trade surplus to $2.6 billion for the month.

	State of Trade 2007 | pdf Canada's State of Trade: Trade and Investment Update – 2007 highlights Canada's solid international commercial performance last year but also notes that this was largely due to strong demand for resource and resource-based products. Although exports rose by 1.1% for the year, growth would have been negative if it were not for resources and resource-based products. Imports increased by 4.2% in 2006 driven by strong consumer demand and an appreciation of the dollar. As a result, Canada trade surplus narrowed to $37.2 billion. FDI flows into Canada surged to $78.3 billion in 2006 while net outward investments were still strong at $51.3 billion. This year's report also includes a special feature on The Rise of Global Value Chains.
