Voice communication systems are ubiquitous in military tactical operations, and are found in many situations where communicating is a difficult technical challenge. CRC is developing technical solutions to deficiencies in fielded communications systems and providing advice on systems which are currently being developed or procured. Improving the performance of such systems, ranging from underwater communication to search and rescue, improves the safety and effectiveness of armed forces.

Data communication and data network concepts are increasingly being deployed, not only for strategic use, but also to the forward edge of the operational arena. These systems promise to increase the flow of information and improve situational awareness. R&D; being conducted into these future communications systems envisions vast increases in the reach of communications, and poses problems in areas such as multimedia support, gateways to other systems, bandwidth bottlenecks, standards and security.
