August 7, 2007

OTTAWA – The Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced the appointment of Mr. Gerard Chidley as a Canadian Commissioner to the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).

"I am pleased Mr. Chidley has accepted to represent Canada as a Commissioner to ICCAT," said Minister Hearn. "Canada will be well-served by his extensive knowledge and experience working within the industry and as an advocate on behalf of fishers at numerous national and international organizations."

ICCAT is a regional fisheries management organization responsible for the management of tuna, swordfish and other related large pelagics in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. There are currently 43 Contracting Parties to ICCAT that range from North, South and Central America to Europe and Africa, as well as distant water fishing nations in Asia. Canada has been a member since the organization was established in 1969.

Mr. Chidley is the owner and co-captain of two fishing vessels. He has extensive experience as an industry representative on several groundfish, pelagics and shellfish advisory groups, including the Canadian Marine Advisory Council and the Northern Shrimp Advisory Committee. Mr. Chidley previously served as an ICCAT commissioner from August 31, 1998 to August 30, 2000.
